अर्जुन विषाद योग (Arjuna Vishada Yoga)

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच | धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे समवेता युयुत्सवः | मामकाः पाण्डवाश्चैव किमकुर्वत सञ्जय ||१||

हिंदी अनुवाद: “धृतराष्ट्र बोले: हे संजय! धर्मभूमि कुरुक्षेत्र में युद्ध की इच्छा से एकत्र हुए मेरे तथा पाण्डु के पुत्रों ने क्या किया?”

English Translation: Dhritarashtra said: On the holy plain of Kurukshetra, gathered together, eager to fight, what did my sons and the sons of Pandu do, O Sanjaya?

सञ्जय उवाच | दृष्ट्वा तु पाण्डवानीकं व्यूढं दुर्योधनस्तदा | आचार्यमुपसङ्गम्य राजा वचनमब्रवीत् ||२||

हिंदी अनुवाद: “संजय बोले: तब राजा दुर्योधन ने पाण्डवों की सेना को व्यूहबद्ध देखकर आचार्य द्रोणाचार्य के पास जाकर यह वचन कहे।”

English Translation: Sanjaya said: Then, seeing the Pandava army drawn up in battle array, King Duryodhana approached his teacher Dronacharya and spoke these words.

पश्यैतां पाण्डुपुत्राणामाचार्य महतीं चमूम् | व्यूढां द्रुपदपुत्रेण तव शिष्येण धीमता ||३||

हिंदी अनुवाद: “हे आचार्य! आपके बुद्धिमान शिष्य द्रुपदपुत्र (धृष्टद्युम्न) द्वारा व्यूहबद्ध पाण्डुपुत्रों की इस विशाल सेना को देखिए।”

English Translation: O Teacher, behold this great army of the sons of Pandu, arrayed for battle by the son of Drupada, your wise disciple!

अत्र शूरा महेष्वासा भीमार्जुनसमा युधि | युयुधानो विराटश्च द्रुपदश्च महारथः ||४||

हिंदी अनुवाद: “इस सेना में भीम और अर्जुन के समान युद्ध करने वाले महान धनुर्धर वीर हैं – युयुधान (सात्यकि), विराट और महारथी द्रुपद।”

English Translation: Here in this army are many heroic warriors, mighty archers equal in battle to Bhima and Arjuna: great fighters like Yuyudhana, Virata, and Drupada.

धृष्टकेतुश्चेकितानः काशिराजश्च वीर्यवान् | पुरुजित्कुन्तिभोजश्च शैब्यश्च नरपुङ्गवः ||५||

हिंदी अनुवाद: “धृष्टकेतु, चेकितान, पराक्रमी काशीराज, पुरुजित्, कुन्तिभोज और नरश्रेष्ठ शैब्य भी यहाँ हैं।”

English Translation: There are also great, heroic, and powerful fighters like Dhrishtaketu, Chekitana, the valiant king of Kashi, Purujit, Kuntibhoja, and Shaibya – the best of men.

युधामन्युश्च विक्रान्त उत्तमौजाश्च वीर्यवान् | सौभद्रो द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्व एव महारथाः ||६||

हिंदी अनुवाद: “पराक्रमी युधामन्यु, शक्तिशाली उत्तमौजा, सौभद्र (अभिमन्यु) और द्रौपदी के पुत्र – ये सभी महारथी हैं।”

English Translation: The brave Yudhamanyu, the powerful Uttamaujas, the son of Subhadra (Abhimanyu), and the sons of Draupadi – all are great warriors.

अस्माकं तु विशिष्टा ये तान्निबोध द्विजोत्तम | नायका मम सैन्यस्य संज्ञार्थं तान्ब्रवीमि ते ||७||

हिंदी अनुवाद: “किन्तु हे द्विजश्रेष्ठ! आपकी जानकारी के लिए मैं अपनी सेना के जो विशेष नायक हैं, उन्हें बताता हूँ।”

English Translation: But for your information, O best of the twice-born, let me tell you about the distinguished commanders who are especially qualified to lead my army.

भवान्भीष्मश्च कर्णश्च कृपश्च समितिञ्जयः | अश्वत्थामा विकर्णश्च सौमदत्तिस्तथैव च ||८||

हिंदी अनुवाद: “आप (द्रोणाचार्य), भीष्म, कर्ण, युद्ध में सदा विजयी कृपाचार्य, अश्वत्थामा, विकर्ण और सोमदत्त के पुत्र भूरिश्रवा – ये सभी हैं।”

English Translation: There are personalities like yourself, Bhishma, Karna, Kripa who are always victorious in battle, Ashvatthama, Vikarna, and the son of Somadatta (Bhurishrava).

अन्ये च बहवः शूरा मदर्थे त्यक्तजीविताः | नानाशस्त्रप्रहरणाः सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः ||९||

हिंदी अनुवाद: “और भी बहुत से वीर हैं जो मेरे लिए जीवन का त्याग करने को तैयार हैं। वे अनेक प्रकार के शस्त्रों से सुसज्जित हैं और सभी युद्ध में निपुण हैं।”

English Translation: There are many other heroes who are prepared to lay down their lives for my sake. They are armed with various weapons and are all skilled in warfare.

अपर्याप्तं तदस्माकं बलं भीष्माभिरक्षितम् | पर्याप्तं त्विदमेतेषां बलं भीमाभिरक्षितम् ||१०||

हिंदी अनुवाद: “भीष्म द्वारा सुरक्षित हमारी सेना अपरिमित है, जबकि भीम द्वारा सुरक्षित इनकी सेना परिमित है।”

English Translation: Our army, protected by Bhishma, is unlimited; but their army, protected by Bhima, is limited.

अयनेषु च सर्वेषु यथाभागमवस्थिताः | भीष्ममेवाभिरक्षन्तु भवन्तः सर्व एव हि ||११||

हिंदी अनुवाद: “अतः सब मोर्चों पर यथायोग्य स्थित होकर आप सब लोग भीष्म की ही सुरक्षा करें।”

English Translation: Therefore, stationed in your respective positions on all fronts, all of you must protect Bhishma at all costs.

तस्य सञ्जनयन्हर्षं कुरुवृद्धः पितामहः | सिंहनादं विनद्योच्चैः शङ्खं दध्मौ प्रतापवान् ||१२||

हिंदी अनुवाद: “तब कुरुवंश के वृद्ध पितामह प्रतापी भीष्म ने सिंह की गर्जना के समान ऊँचे स्वर से शंख बजाया, जिससे दुर्योधन को हर्ष हुआ।”

English Translation: Then the glorious grandsire of the Kuru dynasty, Bhishma, roaring like a lion, blew his conch loudly, infusing joy in Duryodhana.

ततः शङ्खाश्च भेर्यश्च पणवानकगोमुखाः | सहसैवाभ्यहन्यन्त स शब्दस्तुमुलोऽभवत् ||१३||

हिंदी अनुवाद: “उसके बाद अचानक ही शंख, नगाड़े, ढोल, मृदंग और तुरही आदि बजाए गए और वह शब्द अत्यंत भयंकर हो गया।”

English Translation: After that, conches, kettledrums, cymbals, drums, and trumpets were suddenly sounded, and the combined sound was tumultuous.

ततः श्वेतैर्हयैर्युक्ते महति स्यन्दने स्थितौ | माधवः पाण्डवश्चैव दिव्यौ शङ्खौ प्रदध्मतुः ||१४||

हिंदी अनुवाद: “तब सफेद घोड़ों से युक्त विशाल रथ पर स्थित माधव (श्रीकृष्ण) और पाण्डव (अर्जुन) ने दिव्य शंख बजाए।”

English Translation: Then, from the great chariot yoked with white horses, Madhava (Krishna) and the son of Pandu (Arjuna) blew their divine conches.

पाञ्चजन्यं हृषीकेशो देवदत्तं धनञ्जयः | पौण्ड्रं दध्मौ महाशङ्खं भीमकर्मा वृकोदरः ||१५||

हिंदी अनुवाद: “हृषीकेश (श्रीकृष्ण) ने पाञ्चजन्य, धनंजय (अर्जुन) ने देवदत्त, और भयंकर कर्म करने वाले वृकोदर (भीम) ने पौण्ड्र नामक महाशंख बजाया।”

English Translation: Hrishikesha (Krishna) blew the Panchajanya; Arjuna blew the Devadatta; and Bhima, the voracious eater and performer of herculean tasks, blew the great conch Paundra.

अनन्तविजयं राजा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः | नकुलः सहदेवश्च सुघोषमणिपुष्पकौ ||१६||

हिंदी अनुवाद: “राजा युधिष्ठिर ने अनन्तविजय, नकुल ने सुघोष और सहदेव ने मणिपुष्पक शंख बजाया।”

English Translation: King Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, blew his conch Anantavijaya; Nakula and Sahadeva blew their conches Sughosha and Manipushpaka respectively.

काश्यश्च परमेष्वासः शिखण्डी च महारथः | धृष्टद्युम्नो विराटश्च सात्यकिश्चापराजितः ||१७||

हिंदी अनुवाद: “काशीराज (अत्यंत धनुर्धर), महारथी शिखण्डी, धृष्टद्युम्न, विराट और अपराजित सात्यकि – इन सबने भी शंख बजाए।”

English Translation: The king of Kashi, an excellent archer; the great warrior Shikhandi; Dhrishtadyumna; Virata; and the invincible Satyaki – all blew their conches.

द्रुपदो द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्वशः पृथिवीपते | सौभद्रश्च महाबाहुः शङ्खान्दध्मुः पृथक्पृथक् ||१८||

हिंदी अनुवाद: “द्रुपद, द्रौपदी के पुत्र, और महाबाहु अभिमन्यु – इन सबने अलग-अलग अपने-अपने शंख बजाए।”

English Translation: Drupada, the sons of Draupadi, and the mighty-armed son of Subhadra (Abhimanyu), O king, all blew their conches separately.

स घोषो धार्तराष्ट्राणां हृदयानि व्यदारयत् | नभश्च पृथिवीं चैव तुमुलो व्यानुनादयन् ||१९||

हिंदी अनुवाद: “उस भयंकर शब्द ने आकाश और पृथ्वी को गूंजाते हुए धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों के हृदय विदीर्ण कर दिए।”

English Translation: That tumultuous sound, reverberating through the earth and sky, rent the hearts of Dhritarashtra's sons.

अथ व्यवस्थितान्दृष्ट्वा धार्तराष्ट्रान्कपिध्वजः | प्रवृत्ते शस्त्रसम्पाते धनुरुद्यम्य पाण्डवः ||२०||

हिंदी अनुवाद: “तब शस्त्र-संपात (बाणों की वर्षा) प्रारंभ होने पर, धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों को युद्ध के लिए तैयार देखकर, कपिध्वज अर्जुन ने धनुष उठाया।”

English Translation: Then, seeing the sons of Dhritarashtra drawn up for battle, as the exchange of weapons was about to begin, Arjuna, the son of Pandu, whose banner bore the emblem of Hanuman, took up his bow.
